Custom valve design

If you cannot find the valve you need in our catalog, we study your application and adapt an existing valve or design a custom one, for steam, liquids, or gases. We start from our reducing, relief, and control valves and change whatever your process requires.

What we design and the data we need

Valfonta has designed and manufactured pressure control valves in Badalona since 1962. Beyond the standard catalog, we adapt and design custom valves for steam, liquids, or gases to meet each customer’s requirements: pressure reducing valves, pressure relief valves, and other control valves.

Many adaptations are already listed in the datasheets as on-request options: a different body material, connection, or gaskets, a reduced Kv, or a different pressure range. If your case goes further, we study your needs until we find the right valve for your installation. On our blog we explain what custom valves are and cover the basics of designing a pressure valve.

The data we need from you

To study your case, the more complete the initial information, the better. This is what we will ask you for:

  1. The fluid. Steam, liquid, or gas, its minimum and maximum temperature, and any special features: for example, whether it is oxygen or a mineral oil.
  2. The function. Reducing pressure, discharging excess pressure, or regulating from a control system. In the latter case, the signal type and the fail-safe position (normally closed or normally open).
  3. The pressures. The maximum and operating inlet pressure, and the outlet pressure or set pressure you need.
  4. The flow rate. The maximum and minimum flow rates, or the Kv if you have already calculated it.
  5. The installation. The pipe size, the connection type, and the material required by your process or your internal standards.
  6. The requirements. If the valve will be installed in an ATEX zone or needs CE marking under the Pressure Equipment Directive, tell us from the start.

With that data, we will propose a catalog model, a model with on-request options, or a purpose-built design.

What we can adapt

These are the on-request options already listed in our datasheets and catalogs, with the models they apply to.

Body material

Duplex or super duplex in the PRV20, PRV30, PRV44, PRV45, VD, M1, and M2 reducing valves and in the PRV53, PRV54, PRV55, S1, S2, and S3 excess pressure valves. RG10 bronze body on the excess pressure and relief valves. Monel or bronze internals on the M1 and bronze on the VD. The C1 in stainless steel construction.

Connections

Weld ends (socket weld or butt weld) across the entire range of reducing and excess pressure valves and on the C1. Clamp connection on the PRV30, PRV44, PRV45, PRV53, PRV54, and PRV55. BSP or NPT thread on the C1.

Gaskets, plugs, and diaphragms

EPDM, PEEK, Viton, or Aflas gaskets on the PRV30 and PRV44, and NBR or FKM for mineral oils on the PRV54. PEEK, EPDM, FKM, or NBR plug on the M2F and the S3, and stellited on the C1. PTFE diaphragm on the M2 and S2.

Kv and port

Reduced or special Kv on the PRV20, PRV30, PRV44, PRV45, PRV53, PRV54, PRV55, M1, M2, S1, and S2. On the C1, Kv from 0.1 m³/h and reduced port; on the S3, reduced port.

Pressure and temperature ranges

Special outlet ranges on the M2F, set pressure from 5 to 15 barg on the PRV53, and a 350 mm actuator, on request, on the PRV45 (millibar ranges) and the PRV55. On the C1, finned bonnet and graphite packing up to 350 °C, or extended bonnet below −5 °C; on the S3, up to 250 °C with special gaskets.

Special services and accessories

Degreasing for oxygen service on the PRV30, PRV44, PRV53, and PRV54 (the PRV55 is always supplied degreased). Stainless steel actuator on the M2, S2, and PRV55. On the C1, anti-cavitation and low-noise cage, 4–20 mA positioner, and handwheel.

If the adaptation you need is not listed here, tell us about your case anyway: we will study it with you.

Standards and certificates

PED 2014/68/EU

Quality system certified to Module D1. Depending on size, pressure, and fluid, each valve may or may not carry CE marking.

ATEX

Custody of the technical file for reducing valves and for excess pressure, relief, and pneumatic control valves. Many datasheets include II 2 GD marking.

ISO 9001:2015

Design, manufacture, and sale of globe control valves for process control.

Frequently asked questions about valve design

What is a custom valve?

It is a valve adapted to a specific application when the standard model does not fit: with a different material, connection, gaskets, Kv, or pressure range, or designed specifically for your process.

What fluids can custom valves handle?

Steam, liquids, and gases. For oxygen, several models are supplied degreased on request, and specific gaskets are available for mineral oils.

Do you make valves in super duplex?

Yes. Duplex and super duplex are offered on request in the PRV20, PRV30, PRV44, PRV45, VD, M1, and M2 reducing valves and in the PRV53, PRV54, PRV55, S1, S2, and S3 excess pressure valves.

What special connections can be ordered?

Weld ends (socket weld or butt weld) on reducing valves, excess pressure valves, and the C1, and clamp connection on several small-size stainless steel models (PRV30, PRV44, PRV45, PRV53, PRV54, and PRV55).

Do custom valves comply with PED and ATEX?

Valfonta’s quality system is certified to Module D1 of Directive 2014/68/EU, and CE marking depends on size, pressure, and fluid. If the valve will be installed in an ATEX zone, tell us when you order it. See our certificates.

What data do you need to study my case?

The fluid and its temperature, the valve’s function, the inlet and outlet pressures or set pressure, the maximum and minimum flow rate, the connection and material, and the regulatory requirements. The more complete they are, the sooner we can propose a solution.
